What it is
One softgel a day, fish oil first on the label, with 81mg EPA and 53mg DHA guaranteed in every capsule. Not averaged across a batch, and not a total-omega figure with the useful part left unstated. EPA and DHA are the two omega-3s that dogs use for skin and coat, and they have to come pre-formed from fish because dogs convert very little of them from plant oils.
It is formulated to support normal, healthy skin and coat function in healthy dogs. That is the whole claim. It is not a treatment for anything, and if your dog has a skin condition the right first step is a vet, not us.
How to give it
Whichever way suits your dog. Most take the softgel whole, straight from your hand or dropped in with dinner. If yours is a spitter, pierce the capsule and squeeze the oil over their food. Same dose either way, and it smells like fish, which most dogs consider a strong argument in its favour.
By the food bowl, once a day, as part of the routine you already have.
Why the numbers are on the front
The safe daily ceiling for EPA and DHA in a 10kg dog is about 2,080mg. Most supplements tell you the oil weight rather than the EPA and DHA inside it, which makes it impossible to work out where you are against that ceiling. We put the per-capsule figures on the label so you can do the arithmetic, including the arithmetic that tells you not to give more.
How long it takes
Weeks, not days. The living layers of a dog's epidermis renew over roughly three weeks, and dietary fats are built into new cells as they form. Give it two to three months before you judge it. Anyone selling a faster answer is selling you something else.
It also works like a habit rather than a course. The effect depends on it still being fed. Stop, and you drift back to where you started.
